The Roots of Breezy Hill Nursery

Our Story

About the Company

Breezy Hill Nursery, Inc. began as a small design/build firm in 1980 by Jerry and Colleen Epping. The company began as a small start up with only the bare essentials, 3 employees, a couple of wheelbarrows, and a dump truck. Over the years, the company’s commitment to hard work, honesty, and customer satisfaction has helped the business grow into the multifaceted landscape firm which it is today.

In 1981, Jerry and Colleen purchased 40 acres of prime farmland in Salem, WI. The land was strategically planted with nursery stock to aid the landscape business in its design/build process. The nursery, a critical component to business growth allowed the company the opportunity to maximize customer value by designing and installing homegrown plant material at reduced costs. As years went on, the business grew steadily. Jerry and Colleen’s home office could no longer suit the needs of the company. In 1987, the company purchased a piece of land south of the nursery location, formerly know as the Hooker Lake Inn. The property was developed into a Garden Center for nursery product and also served as office space for administration and design staff.

Since then, multiple adjacent properties have been added on to the Hooker Lake property to facilitate expanding landscape operations. Currently, the 80 acre site hosts a Retail Garden Center, Retail & Wholesale Landscape Supply, along with Greenhouse and Nursery Operations. The site also features the old Kenosha County Highway building which has been renovated into a mechanic’s shop and equipment storage area for Landscape Construction & Landscape Maintenance Operations. In 2003, Nursery Operations expanded out to Clinton, WI where 630 acres of prime farmland was purchased. The company made this decision because of the climbing demand for nursery stock and because the business needed the extra acreage to increase nursery production. The Clinton facility also supports landscape construction operations in the Rockford, IL and Janesville, WI market areas. In 2011, BHN started the development of a secondary Retail/Wholesale Landscape Nursery and Supply Yard has been established in Menomonee Falls, WI. The facility has been strategically located to better serve Milwaukee and surrounding market areas. The 25 acre site is located just west of I-45 on County Line Rd. The facility also hosts full service Landscape Construction & Landscape Maintenance operations. In 2019, BHN purchased plant material from the former Beaver Creek Nursery. Soon thereafter, BHN purchased the land and equipment, providing for future growth and nursery expansion.

Today, the company employs over 350 seasonal/full time employees at the 4 locations. The company has grown in size, but it remains true to its roots of hard work, honesty, customer satisfaction and overall value. The company will continue to remain family owned and operated business with a mission to serve the unique needs of each and every customer.
